At the beginning of this overly dramatic silver-screen annoyance, it's election day, and we see Republican President Kelsey Grammar with his evil, scheming political advisor in the Oval Office. While Grammar listens, the advisor (Stanley Tucci) tells the Republican Party of Florida to round up as many tall, blonde, Arian-looking guys they can and send them to the West Palm Beach polling places to keep Jews from voting.
Apparently, Kelsey Grammar didn't have a problem portraying the GOP as a party of anti-Semites. And it's downhill from there.
Kevin Costner plays "Bud," the working-class New Mexico screw-up at the center of a tied Presidential election. He promises his young daughter he'll vote in the Presidential election, but when he doesn't show up, she sneaks in and votes for him. An electrical malfunction prevents the vote from registering, and Costner gets to recast his vote later, since it will decide the White House race--the State of New Mexico will decide the race, and it's tied.
To win his vote, both President Kelsey Grammar and Democratic candidate Dennis Hopper pander to him. When Bud says he thinks gays should get married, Republican Grammar shoots an ad endorsing it. When he says he's pro-life (he doesn't know what it means), the liberal Democrat makes a pro-life ad.
Bud is your typical Hollywood version of the middle-American White male: stupid, a drunk, immature, irresponsible, a bad parent, a poor employee, etc. Is there any other kind of White male in America, according to Hollywood (and apparently investor Costner)?
And, of course, like most of these movies, along with the dumb-dopey-working-class-immature-trailer-park-failure-father, there's a very smart daughter, who is the adult in the movie. Are you as sick of this as I am--that, in Hollywood, the kid is often the adult and vice versa? It gets old. Madeline Carroll, the young actress who plays her, and Paula Patton, the actress who plays an aggressive, scheming local news reporter are so saccharine and phony, it's unbearable. There is more crying, yelling, screaming, and melodrama in this supposed comedy than five decades of "All My Children." I couldn't take much more of this.
But, wait, it gets worse. The most annoying political commentators pollute the screen throughout: Chris Matthews, Arianna Huffington, Larry King, Tucker Carlson. They're embarrassing, but, sadly, not embarrassed. The only one missing is Keith Olbermann. Thank Heaven for small favors.
If there was one good thing about this movie--aside from the fact that it actually ended--it was that the movie made a point against illegal aliens taking American jobs, but it didn't make the point very well.
While Costner works at an egg-processing plant that employs a lot of illegal aliens and makes company announcements in Spanish, he loses his job because he's a screw-up. While he complains about the problem of "insourcing"--importing illegal aliens into America to take away Americans' jobs--he is repeatedly late to work, destroys a lot of eggs, and is just a bad employee.
If "Bud"/Costner worked for you, you'd probably be tempted to replace him with an illegal alien, too. But, then again, that's Hollywood: They can't even tell the truth about "insourcing"--and that it's taking jobs from good, hard-working employees.
Bottom line: This movie stank. It was long, boring, not funny, and not exciting. I laughed like maybe once at the dopey "jokes." So uninteresting I briefly fell asleep. But don't worry--the nonstop maudlin and pseudo-patriotic muzak throughout the movie kept me awake, annoyed, and mostly distracted from trying to hear the dialogue.
If Kevin Costner's "Bud" is the kind of voter that elects Presidents, perhaps we should become a dictatorship.

The ability of blood
tests to precisely measure very low doses of anti-rejection drugs in kidney
transplant patients may make a significant difference in assuring long-term
viability and survival, according to research presented at the
American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) annual meeting.
The current thinking in transplant medicine favors reducing doses of
tacrolimus and other immune-suppressive drugs as much as possible after
kidney-transplant procedures. Even though we are succeeding in preventing
organ rejection, we havent made much progress to improve long-term
survival, said Sudarshan Hebbar, M.D., senior medical director, Abbott
Diagnostics. Unfortunately, most kidney transplant patients will go back
on dialysis in eight to ten years, in part because the anti-rejection drugs
can be toxic to the kidneys.
Dr. Hebbar added that kidney-transplant patients have high incidence of
heart attacks and other cardiovascular disorders from long-term effects of
renal disease. Therefore, minimizing drug toxicity over time is considered
one way to help improve long-term graft survival and preserve quality of
life for transplant patients.
To minimize long-term toxicity of transplant medications, physicians
frequently aim to taper down doses of immunosuppressive drugs to as low a
level as possible without risking rejection. Successful low-dose regimens
of tacrolimus and other anti-rejection medications require highly precise,
ultra-sensitive drug-monitoring assays, said Daniel Levine, Ph.D.,
director of the clinical laboratory, Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Clinical
Research Laboratory at The Rogosin Institute in New York City.
Dr. Levine emphasized the importance of using an accurate and precise
test to monitor patients on low-dose treatment regimens. At low doses,
even the slightest variation in blood-level readings could be devastating
to transplant patients. The consequence for the laboratory is twofold: it
must have accurate, precise testing for immunosuppressive drugs, and
tacrolimus tests that are accurate to 4 ng/mL are no longer adequate, he
explained.
Dr. Levine reported results of his studies evaluating the performance
of the Abbott ARCHITECT assay for tacrolimus, the most widely used
immunosuppressant drug. He said the usual dosing range for the medication
is between 2 and 15 ng/mL, with lower doses preferred. The challenge for
the laboratory, therefore, is to assure with the utmost confidence to the
physician that a tacrolimus blood level of 3 ng/mL is exactly right and not
5, Levine said.
In the trials, the Abbott ARCHITECT tacrolimus assay was accurate and
precise at low levels and showed consistent results. The functional
sensitivity in our hands was 0.9 ng/mL, exceeding the package insert claim
of 2 ng/mL. We are fully confident the ARCHITECT tacrolimus assay meets our
requirement for low-level tacrolimus monitoring, Levine said.
The ARCHITECT tacrolimus assay is the only automated transplant
monitoring test that meets international standards for low-level
monitoring, according to Dr. Hebbar.
The ARCHITECT tacrolimus assay is used for the quantitative
determination of tacrolimus in human whole blood, as an aid in managing
liver and kidney transplant patients receiving tacrolimus therapy.

Everyones talking about Disney star Miley Cyrus dating an older man. The 15 year old has been seen getting smoochy with a 22 year old backup dancer by the name of Marshall.

Whats the big deal? Everyone knows 22 year old boys have the emotional age of a 13 year old

Meanwhile, a celebrity plastic surgery website says that Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus needs a nose job. Are they nuts?

In New Zealand, both Aja Rock and Nicky Watson are reported to have had at least two nose jobs, although the prize has to go to reality television regular Brigitte Nielsen of The Surreal Life and Celebrity Rehab (reunion episode screening this Tuesday on Sky TV) who plans to be filmed having cosmetic surgery

The 44-year old model and actress is planning on undergoing numerous plastic surgeries while a TV crew films the operations for a three-part program to be broadcast on German TV channel RTL.

According to Brigitte, she will receive, a complete renewal: facelift, eyelift, fat injections in my face, liposuction, a breast lift and I need new teeth.

Ugh. Thats one TV show Miss Prozac wont be watching.
