Women who are deficient in vitamin D at the time they are diagnosed with breast cancer are nearly 75 percent more likely to die from the disease than women with sufficient vitamin D levels, and their cancer is twice as likely to spread to other parts of the body.
This study links vitamin D with the aggressiveness of disease, said JoEllen Walsh of the University of Albany, who was not involved in the study. It suggests that your vitamin D status may affect how your disease progresses.
A number of prior studies have strongly demonstrated that vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of developing cancers of the breast, colon, esophagus, pancreas and prostate, and perhaps others. But until now, no study has looked at how vitamin D levels affect the progress of any cancer.
Between 1989 and 1995, researchers tested the blood of 512 women who had been newly diagnosed with breast cancer. All the breast cancer cases were localized, meaning the disease had not spread beyond the breast and armpit region. The average participant age was 50.
Fifteen percent of the women with healthy vitamin D levels died from their cancer, and 17 percent had their cancers metastasize, or spread to other organs. In contrast, 26 percent of the vitamin D-deficient women died, and 31 percent had cancer that metastasized. This translated into a 73 percent higher risk of death among women who were vitamin D deficient, and a 94 percent higher risk of the cancer spreading.
Among a third group of women, classified as not deficient in the vitamin but still falling short of optimal blood levels, there was no difference in cancer death rates.
Vitamin D deficiency was significantly more common among women with a higher body weight. According to study author Pamela Goodwin of Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto, this is because fat tissue acts as a trap for vitamin D.
Levels were also lower in younger women, she said, which was a bit of a surprise, until we realized older women were taking more supplements.
Women who were premenopausal or had high insulin levels were also more likely to be deficient in vitamin D.
Only 24 percent of the women involved in the study had vitamin D levels considered healthy, while 37.5 percent were considered deficient and the remaining 38.5 percent fell in between.
This study found that vitamin D deficiency is very common among women with breast cancer, and it suggests that vitamin D deficiency is linked to poorer outcomes in these women, said Nancy Davidson, director of the breast cancer program at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Goodwin recommended that women who are diagnosed with breast cancer should take a simple blood test to determine their bodys vitamin D levels.
If youre a woman with breast cancer, its probably worthwhile having vitamin D levels checked. If theyre deficient, they should take more to get it in the range that we think is beneficial, she said. This study is significant because it tells us this may be one thing women can do to improve their prognosis, said Anne McTiernan of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Even with strong evidence that vitamin D can help prevent - and, in the current study, fight off - various cancers, researchers are still unclear on the mechanism by which the chemical works.
We know from basic science studies that breast cancer cells have vitamin D receptors and can interact with vitamin D, Goodwin said.
Some scientists have suggested that the nutrient might play a role in regulating programmed cell death, without which cells can turn cancerous.
Vitamin D is pretty unique in its action in that it does enter the cancer cells and induces them to undergo a cell death process, Walsh said. The effects of vitamin D on breast cancer cells are very similar to the established drug Tamoxifen that many women take for breast cancer.
In a demonstration for ABC News, Walsh added vitamin D to a breast cancer culture, causing the cells to shrivel up and die.
Breast cancer cells are not the only cells with vitamin D receptors. In fact, nearly every cell in the body interacts with the vitamin in some way.
Vitamin D, technically a hormone, is synthesized by the body upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight. It can also be acquired from certain dietary sources, including grains and dairy, which are fortified with it in many countries, or via supplements.
The average light-skinned person can produce all the vitamin D he needs from about 15 minutes a day of sunlight on the face and hands, while it takes about twice as long for a darker skinned person. But at far northern latitudes, especially during the winter, there may not be enough sunlight for the body to produce sufficient quantities.
Daily vitamin D recommendations vary widely by country, with the United States and Canada recommending 200 IU per day for children and 400 IU for adults. But many researchers, and even the Canadian Cancer Society, have recommended that this value be raised to 1,000 IU per day. While 400 IU may be sufficient to maintain bone health, scientists say, higher levels are needed to provide cancer-fighting benefits.

People suffering cardiac arrest are five times less likely to survive in Alabama than those in Seattle, an analysis of emergency medical services (EMS)-treated cardiac arrest outcomes in 10 areas in North America has shown.
More than 166,000 Americans go into cardiac arrest outside a hospital each year and single standard guideline could help EMS and emergency room (ER) teams determine which cardiac arrest victims might be benefited by admission in hospital. This would also reduce futile efforts on patients who have no chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J. Consumer education initiatives from Pfizer Consumer Healthcare have brought attention to the companys Benadryl allergy treatment and Neosporin antibiotic ointment.
The influx of prescription and over-the-counter allergy products introduced over the past several years could be creating an allergy treatment for allergy sufferers seeking effective relief, says a Pfizer spokeswoman.

Last Sunday, news came that Canada—sensible, quiet, some would even say boring Canada—will hold an election on Oct. 14, its third in four years. Those outside the country may wonder what the problem is; in Canada, after all, health care is free, the dollar is strong, same-sex marriage is legal, and the government had the good sense to stay out of Iraq. You might think of Canada as the un-America, where the only debate ought to be whether to spend the countrys growing oil wealth on faster snowmobiles, bigger hockey rinks, or Anne Murray box sets.
But beneath the calm exterior, Canadas political system is in turmoil. Since 2004, a succession of unstable minority governments has led to a constant campaign frenzy, brutalizing Canadas once-broad political consensus and producing a series of policies at odds with the countrys socially liberal, fiscally conservative identity. Canada is quietly becoming a political basket case, and this latest election may make things even worse.
Left-leaning Canadians blame the countrys predicament on the current Conservative government, which was first elected two years ago. Theyre right, to a point. The Conservative Party, formed five years ago in a merger of the countrys two right-wing parties, is Canadas first experience with an anti-government, socially conservative party in the mold of Reagan-Bush Republicans. Its leader, Stephen Harper, who is now the prime minister, once called Canada a Northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term.
But the Conservative Party wouldnt be in power, let alone willing to risk such divisive policies, were it not for the collapse of the countrys most formidable political institution, the Liberal Party of Canada. The Liberals have been Canadas left-wing standard-bearers since the countrys independence in 1867. And just as Canadas right-wing parties were coming together, the Liberal Party was coming apart.
In early 2004, Canadas auditor-general found that under the Liberal government, public funds intended to promote the federal government in the province of Quebec had been diverted toward advertising companies connected to the Liberal Party in the form of inflated payments. In response, the prime minister called a public inquiry, which only prolonged the controversy.
In the 2004 election, the Liberal government was reduced from a majority to a minority. Nineteen months later, it lost power entirely, and the partys leader resigned. The Liberals then embarked on a long, fractious leadership campaign—leaving the party exhausted and broke, and tempting the governing Conservatives to introduce ever more draconian policies with little fear of the consequences.
As the Liberals work on rebuilding, Canadas other left-wing party, the New Democratic Party, has grown at their expense; the Green Party, long a fringe movement in Canada, gained its first member of parliament when an independent MP joined the Greens; and the Bloc Québécois, which shares many Liberal positions but advocates for Quebecs independence, remains a force in that province. The Conservatives may not represent the views of most Canadians, but with four parties fighting for the left-wing vote, the Conservatives might win simply by sliding up the middle.
Italians and Israelis may have learned how to function under minority governments, but Canadians are still working on it. If the current election ends in a third consecutive minority government, the polarization of Canadian politics will continue, and with it the brutal, zero-sum politicking that has left the country in convulsions.

Whooping cough is an acute respiratory infection spread by coughing and sneezing. Symptoms are similar to the common cold and include runny nose, sneezing, low grade fever and cough. The cough often becomes worse after seven or more days with one or more of the following symptoms:
* Sudden, uncontrollable fits or spells of coughing.
* A “whoop” which is a high pitched noise heard when breathing in and after a cough spasm.
* Apnea (not breathing).
* Gagging or vomiting after the coughing spells.
Complications of whooping cough include bacterial pneumonia, rib fractures and even death. Anyone who suspects they have whooping cough should seek medical treatment with their primary care physician or at their local health department.
Fortunately, a vaccine is available to prevent whooping cough. The vaccine is contained in two different combination products both of which protect against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough). DTaP is the vaccine product given to infants and children up to seven years of age. Tdap is the vaccine product given to adolescents and adults.
“It is especially important that adults in close contact with infants receive the Tdap vaccine,” said Beth Rowe-West, RN, BSN, head of the Immunization Branch. “Parents, grandparents and caregivers of infants should be vaccinated so the infant is not exposed to the disease.”
Infants get their first dose of DTaP at two months of age, but do not complete their primary series of DTaP vaccine until they are six months of age. They also get a booster dose at about a year of age and another before entering school. They are vulnerable until they receive all the recommended doses of vaccine.
Children in our state are required by North Carolina law to receive five doses of the DTaP vaccine before entering kindergarten. However, it is not uncommon for whooping cough to develop as children age and their immunity to the disease wanes. For that reason, school entry requirements were changed this year to address the increase in whooping cough cases seen in our state. These rule changes will go into effect beginning with the 2008-09 school year.
The new rule states that a booster dose of Tdap vaccine is required for the following individuals:
* All students attending public school who are entering the 6th grade on or after August 1, 2008, if five years or more have passed since the last dose of tetanus/diphtheria toxoid.
* All students not attending public schools (i.e., private, home-school, non-traditional schools) who are 12 years of age on or after August 1, 2008, if five years or more have passed since the last dose of tetanus/diphtheria toxoid.
* Individuals enrolling in college or university for the first time on or after July 1, 2008, if a tetanus/diphtheria toxoid or tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccine has not been administered within the past 10 years.
The best way to fight whooping cough and prevent the potentially tragic consequences of the disease is to get immunized. Individuals should contact their doctors or local health departments to schedule an appointment for vaccination.

We just recently purchased a Spirit XE150 Elliptical and are in the market to purchase a home gym for muscle toning. It was easier to get great reviews for the elliptical. I was able to get reviews from both customers and people that service or fix the machines, but home gyms are a little tricky. Our budget is 1k or lower since the elliptical were way over budget already. I weigh 120lbs 52 and am looking to get some muscle tone. My husband weighs currently 205lbs 510.. he gained 60lbs since we started dating 5yrs ago my fault and I feel bad He has lost about 15lbs because of change of diet (ie more greens, salmon instead of steak, wine instead of smirnoff, sushi instead of applebee’s, etc), but he would like to tone his muscles while losing weight to avoid sagging Any advice will be helpfull thank you so much :o)
The Total Gym! I bought one a few years ago based on the recommendation of a friend of mine who was a personal trainer. He basically said it was the cheapest thing you could get that really would give you a good workout. You wont get huge muscles using it since you can only use your body weight, but it certainly tones you.
I love my Total Gym- I brought it into NYC with me because the gym near my apartment is way too crowded and costs around $90/month.
Im not looking to build a ton of muscle anymore- just stay toned - so the workout that the Total Gym gives you is excellent! You can really do a lot of exercises on it, and they really give you a good workout for a price that is nice and cheap.
The gym itself isnt too light- at least 50 lbs+, so I wouldnt get it if you cant lift that by yourself and arent going to leave it out all the time. It would be a little awkward to keep under a bed, but I have mine stored to the side of my desk in my aparment, and it fits in nicely and I dont have to move it too far when I use it. I basically see setting it up and part of my workout, so it isnt too bad.
I also just bought the tricep dip bars and a leg kit - so basically I own the club version w/o the ability to add weights.
Im fairly strong, but the total gym still gives me a solid work out, though I wont get much bigger. The only problem is with legs - my own body weight is not enough to give me a good quad workout, but it is better than nothing and as long as you do high reps you still get quite tired.

Journalists Release Guantanamo Bay Report
By Ashfaq Yusufzai
PESHAWAR, Jul 31 (IPS) - Two Afghan journalists, who spent three years in the infamous United States military prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have released a new chronicle on life in the now famous iron cages.
Their 453-page volume in the Pashto language is even more graphic than the one released recently by Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, Taliban's former ambassador to Pakistan who was handed over to the U.S. military, shortly after it invaded Afghanistan and ousted the fundamentalist regime in 2001.
Titled Da Guantanamo Maatai Zawlanai' (Broken Chains of Guantanamo), the volume describes the extreme physical and mental torture to which the inmates -- mostly suspected Taliban and their allies who were picked up from Afghanistan or Pakistan -- were subjected to.
Muslim Dost, 45, and his co-author and brother Badar-uz-Zaman, 37, told IPS during an interview on the weekend that they saw evidence of female inmates in Guantanamo. ''We saw forms filled in by female inmates at the office of the investigators.''
One of the forms, left lying around carelessly on a table by U.S. military investigators, had apparently been filled in by a woman from Lahore, in the Punjab province of Pakistan, and it showed that she was pregnant, they said.
Dost and Zaman, both journalists, were exonerated by a military tribunal at Guantanamo and released on Apr. 22, 2005. They were originally picked up by Pakistan's military Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) on Nov. 17, 2001 from the Speena Warai village on the outskirts of Peshawar and were taken to a detention centre in Bagaram Air Base, before being flown to Guantanamo.
"We used to publish Arabic, Pashto and Urdu monthlies. Some of the articles in them had angered the ISI, which handed us over to the U.S. forces, handcuffed and blindfolded. We didn't have any connection with the Taliban, but the ISI wanted to settle scores with us," said Dost, who migrated to Pakistan with his entire family 24 years ago from his native Kot district in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Like Mullah Zaeef, the brothers lay blame for many unjustifiable detentions at Guantanamo on the shadowy ISI, which, they said, went about picking up innocent citizens to show cooperation with the U.S. military and also to claim large bounties.
''A father was taking his ailing son to hospital in Quetta, Balochistan, when he was caught by police and asked to pay a bribe for his release. He refused to pay and ended up at Guantanamo with his son. After two years, the son had so transformed that he was talking in English and was unable to recognize his father,'' they said.
Only ten of those ever held at Guatanamo, since its establishment in January 2002, have been formally charged. An investigation conducted, earlier this year by the Seton Hall University in New Jersey showed that 55 percent of prisoners are not alleged to have committed any hostile acts against the U.S., and 40 percent had no affiliation with al-Qaeda.
Military documents, cited by the university, suggested that only eight percent of prisoners were alleged to have been fighting on behalf of any Islamist group, and that 86 percent were captured and handed over to the U.S. military by the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan that opposed the Taliban or by Pakistani authorities.
Photographs in the new book were mainly sourced from members of the U.S. forces who took pictures to be sold clandestinely to the media. ''We were happy to be photographed. We knew that photos were the only thing that could inform the world community about our ordeal,'' Zaman told IPS.
''The ISI people, which thoroughly searched our house took away valuables including precious gemstones, worth 300,000 US dollars," Dost said.
''We had not committed any war crime but had exercised our basic right of writing about the ISI's wrongdoings what was fact for which we paid a huge price,'' said Zaman.
A father of nine, Dost says he received his first letter from his family after 11 months through ICRC. "A total of 24 letters, out of hundreds sent by the family, reached us with most of its contents deleted by the U.S. forces in an effort to make us worry.''
"The shortest period between letters from the family was two months. Most of the letters took more than four months to reach us," he added.
''Among the prisoners were real brothers, fathers and sons, who were kept in 180 sq cm iron cages. Sometimes, the cages would be placed close enough to enable conversation,'' said Dost.
''Water was plentiful for drinking and ablutions, but supplies were cut when we protested on some matters. We were made to perform congregational prayers while caged,'' said Zaman. 'Trimming our beards and eyebrows, making us strip and desecrating the Holy Quran were other matters that angered us.''
Their testimony corroborates what former envoy Zaeef recorded in his 156-page Da Guantanamo Anzoor' (The Picture of Guantanamo). "So harsh was the torture and treatment that prisoners even prayed for death rather than be in detention," Zaeef, wrote. "Their oppression can never be forgiven."
Zaman said that food was served to the detainees were deficient. Sleep deprivation was another way in which the inmates were constantly harassed, he recalled.
After inspecting the camp in June 2004, the International Committee of the Red Cross issued a confidential report -- which found its way to the New York Times in November 2004 -- in which the inspectors accused the U.S. military of using "humiliating acts, solitary confinement, temperature extremes, use of forced positions" against the prisoners.
To be translated into English soon, Broken Chains of Guantanamo' is priced at 3.3 dollars and has 64 pictures showing some of the trauma the prisoners were subjected to.
''We have fully naked pictures of the POWs, but decided not to include them in the book to avoid hurting further the sentiments of Muslims," the brothers said.
''We had no link with the outside world. The U.S. army would give us information that they thought would make us worry. They informed us, for example, that Saddam Hussain had been captured," Dost said.
The brothers said that, in general, Spanish-speaking members of the U.S. army were kinder to the prisoners but they were transferred when the authorities felt they had a ''soft corner for us''.
"From the cages, the POWs would spit at the U.S. army men who seemed to be extremely fearful. They would allow us to write, but would give us only refills fearing that we would hit them with them with pens," said Dost, who still fears being whisked away by the ISI.
Many governments, including U.S. allies, and human rights groups have criticised the indefinite detentions and the prisoners' lack of legal rights at Guantanamo.
While the The Pentagon insists the detainees are treated humanely, international concern concern increased after three prisoners hanged themselves recently. "If three detainees had hanged themselves many others had gone on hunger strikes and were alive only through painful force-feeding,'' Dost said.
What he regrets most is that he was not allowed to carry back with him literary pieces he penned during his incarceration. He had translated the Holy Quran and 25,000 poetic couplets.
"We were allowed to bring only a fraction of this literary work. Those poetic pieces were written under a certain ambience, which is precious to poets. Pieces I wrote on Islamic jurisprudence and Pashto grammar were also confiscated,'' he says.
The brothers said a French journalist has offered to translate their book into French. ''But we intend to translate it into English, Urdu and Arabic first.''
Following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the Guantanamo Bay military tribunals had no legal status, the administration of President George W. Bush announced on Jul. 11 that all detainees in U.S.

- Two people have been confirmed dead after being exposed to toxic chemicals in a work accident that sent eight to the hospital, causing two emergency rooms in St. Louis to shut down Saturday night.
St. Anthony's Medical Center in south St. Louis County and SSM DePaul Health Center in north St. Louis County both were forced to quarantine the patients and those who may have been exposed to the patients who came in for treatment after being exposed to nitroaniline, a highly toxic chemical that can cause serious breathing problems and may even result in death.

DENVER -- If you relied on the mainstream media for coverage of this week's Democratic National Convention, you probably visualized everyone clicking their heels together and entering the land of OZ.
While the mainstream media and politicians were cloistered together, the people were in the streets, voicing disgust over the Bush regime, which decimated civil liberties and turned the Earth into the corporate profiteers' commodity. At the same time, the Iraq war continued with the mainstream media complicit in the genocide of women and children in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The signs reminded all that the Bush regime and Congress violated the Geneva Conventions and carried out kidnapping, torture and murder of people in Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo and secret prisons.
The lawlessness that prevailed in the White House and Congress was maintained by the police at the Democratic National Convention who provoked peaceful demonstrators on Monday night, culminating in an at attack by riot police who sprayed pepper spray and shot rubber bullets at peaceful protesters.
The collapse of US democracy was most poignant at the Freedom for Political Prisoners rally and march at the federal courthouse in Denver on Monday. Here, Aurora police drew weapons on people of color: American Indians, blacks, Chicanos and others. It was clear that there are two Americas and one America is filling the prisons because of racial profiling and racial injustice. While simulating waterboarding and US torture, activists demanded freedom for Leonard Peltier, Mumia Abu-Jamal, the Cuban Five and other political prisoners.
With courage, US servicemen led the march against the war and occupation in Iraq on Wednesday. On Thursday, marchers demanded that US lawlessness be halted and the ICE raids against workers that are dividing families be halted. At the "We Are America," march for immigrant rights, marchers pointed out that hundreds of workers arrested in Laurel, Mississippi, in raids have been sent to one of the most racist towns in America: Jena, Louisiana.
As the so-called "clean coal," industry poured millions into the convention, protesters reminded the people that there is no such thing as "clean coal." A moment of truth came when ABC news producer Asa Eslocker was roughly arrested. Eslocker, an investigative reporter, was pushed into the traffic by a Boulder police officer. During the arrest, Eslocker was grabbed around the neck by an officer, as documented by a film crew. Eslocker was waiting on a public sidewalk to film financial donors leaving a hotel.
Meanwhile, those marchers who were sprayed with pepper spray on Monday were not allowed to wash it off when they were detained and jailed. "This is a form of torture," said one street medic, describing the poisons that are absorbed internally. Another medic described the wound of a rubber bullet. The women of Code Pink were targeted by police, with women thrown violently to the ground during arrests, as documented in videos.
In the St Paul/Minneapolis area, police raids of homes and community centers are already underway in preparation for the Republican National Convention, Sept. 1 -- 4. Protesters say they are not intimidated.
As thousands marched this week in Denver, volunteers at Food Not Bombs gathered donated foods and fed the people. In the streets, the people asked: "Is anyone really listening?" The people don't have a clue. But for those who spent this week in the streets of Denver, a new America was emerging. The people were giving voice to truth, a prized commodity in this age of US genocide, corrupt media and the corporate rape of the Earth Mother.

?The next morning, Busskohls friend Eric Eischens came forward to report that Busskohl told him he had come up with a plan on how to murder someone.
?The meticulously detailed plan included finding a man who lived by himself and within walking distance of his Woodbury home. Busskohl detailed to Eischens how he would break a window at the mans house at night, a day or two before the slaying, giving him access to the house the night of the killing.
?Then, dressed in dark clothes, a swim cap, latex gloves covered with cotton gloves and shoe coverings, he planned to enter his victims bedroom and stab him in the chest or slash his throat. Then, he would either cut off the eyelids of the victim or cut out his heart.
?Busskohl said he would then walk home before burning the evidence with acetone.
The next day, Busskohl was arrested, saying in interviews with police: m not even sure if I would have gone through with it.
Surely his responses were chilling. He told police that he owns knives and started having thoughts of harming others months ago, and that if at all possible, it would only be a complete stranger.
He said he broke the window of Frattos home. When investigators asked if he did so to enter the home, Busskohl replied: Not that night. When investigators asked if he planned to break in later, he responded:
Police secured a warrant and searched his home and vehicle, where they found a backpack with a swimming cap, heavy latex gloves, scrubs, gauze and Frattos address along with a map to his house. Also in the backpack: shoe covers, a small pry bar, black mask, two bags, a knife and flashlights, as well as tweezers, scissors and a scalpel.
In additional interviews, Busskohl admitted the items would have been used in his plot, and said he didnt know whether killing the man would make him feel bad, or whether he would have liked it and been encouraged to kill again. Busskohl said he stood outside Frattos window for a long time before breaking it that morning, and said he believed he would not have come back to finish the act.
Fratto, his intended victim lives just a few blocks away from Busskohl.
These days he sleeps with a baseball bat next to his bed and a flashlight on his nightstand. A 10-foot-long 2 by 4 barricades his bedroom door. Hes installed lights with motion sensors on the outside of his home and added new locks on his doors, both inside and out.
Walking through his home, Fratto shows off the locks on his interior doors. They rattle and clang with every movement.
s going to have to bang a little bit to get in at me. And hopefully, Ill be able to wake up by then, he says through a wild-eyed gaze and booming laugh.
If not, sayonara.
Not just Fratto, everyone out there seems alarmed in the quiet Minneapolis suburb of about 50,000 people. Residents say they survey their homes before entering, secure their windows and check behind curtains and other household items once inside. Once rarely used, alarm systems now are on constantly.
Defense attorney Joe Friedberg says his client is a threat to no one, though he could understand people becoming agitated.
The evidence I received he [Busskohl] discussed very openly these things with the police, Friedberg said. When you said bizarre, thats probably an understatement.
Busskohl was taking about seven or eight medications a combination of anti-rejection medicine for his heart and anti-depressants at the time of his arrest, according to Friedberg.
He said a doctor who evaluated him in jail recommended he be taken off one medication and two others be substituted in its place.
Within eight to 10 hours, the bizarre type of thinking he was undergoing was gone, Friedberg says. If anybody were to meet him and talk to him at this point, he represents no threat to anyone.
Attorney Johnson conceded that charging such a bizarre case was a challenge to Washington County prosecutors, who hadnt seen anything like it.
This case is very disturbing to us, he said. We see behavior that is very scary, and yet were limited by the law as to how we can respond to it.
We dont have preventative detention in this country, where we think somebodys going to commit a crime, and so then were able to lock them up, Johnson said. s in a facility being examined by a very, very good psychologist to determine what his mental state is.
Johnson said prosecutors scoured Minnesota appellate court decisions, and that an act of serious violence or other substantial steps toward murder would be necessary to justify an attempted murder charge.
A 2002 article in a University of Minnesota Academic Health Center newsletter featured a 12-year-old Busskohl, nicknamed for whom his classmates at Bailey Elementary School raised $6,000 for heart research in his honor.
According to a Minneapolis Star Tribune article from 2004, Busskohl, who had a failed heart valve, received a transplant in 2003. According to his Facebook profile, Busskohl graduated from Woodbury Senior High School this year and attends Century College.
If convicted on the charges, Busskohl could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of $17,500 for the first count and a maximum of 5 years and $10,000 fine for the second count. Busskohl has no prior arrests, and the prosecutors office said under the sentencing guidelines of Minnesota it would be unlikely hed serve more than 48 months if convicted.
His arraignment is set for September 3.

My husband and I volunteered on Palins Alaska campaign when she ran for Governor. Here are a few of my thoughts:
First: I have known Sarah Palin for years. How? I met her through AK Right to Life. She always came to our fund-raising dinners, she always came to pro-life events (even when she took time off from politics to be home with her children), and one of her kids became AK RTLs baby mascot for our stationery. She is the real deal when it comes to pro-life matters. This became even more clear when at the age of 44 of this year, she gave birth to a baby with Downs Syndrome. BTW: No one knew she was pregnant until 1 month before giving birth!
Second: She worked under previous (Catholic-pro-life) Governor Frank Murkowskis Admin and ended up resigning because the corruption was so blatant and so bad she could not effect change. She gave up her 6 figure income to do so. This catapulted her into stardom for Alaskans.
Third: When she ran for Governor, she was up against the incumbent Murkowski (the least popular Governor in the nation at the time) AND against two-time former super popula,r Governor Democrat Tony Knowles. Husband and I both had deep respect for her so we decided to join her campaign. We were not the only ones. I have worked many a campaign before and this was the first time in my experience where normal, average, non-partisan types joined the campaign. When I decided to wave signs for her on street corners (with my baby strapped on my back), I was blown away by the hundreds of other Alaskans who had the same idea.
Fourth: When she ran for Governor, the AK Republican Party threw fundraisers for Palins Democratic rival! No joke! They hated her because she was the one who blew the whistle on their corruption. Big Oil hates her because she refused and refuses to be bribed. She had very little campaign money and her very few tv ads always said Frugally paid for by the Palin Campaign. Yet, she won, sweeping the State.
Fifth: I worked the polls on voting day and Democrats, Independents and non-voters alike came to vote for her.
My advice: Dont underestimate her, my friends.
Last night my husband and I were convinced we would support Obama. Thanks to McCains VP choice, we dont know now.
Update:Here is a good post by fellow Alaskan liberal blogger Steve. He does a great job looking at this from an objective perspective. Read the comments, too.

Last week it was a look at some of the 15, 16 and 17 year-olds attending Broncos training camp. This week it's a glance at some of the veterans rolling into town in less than two weeks time.
1990's - 18 year-olds
This is perhaps the age group where the Broncos have made the biggest transition in regards to what they drafted in 2005 to what they have now. Of the 1990 bantam draft, only 1st rounder Geordie Wudrick is on the current roster.
The Broncos traded Ian Curtis (PG), Phil Gervais (Edm), Jordan Mistelbacher (Evt), Kris Foucault (Koot), and lost Clayton Cumiskey in the Edmonton Oil Kings Expansion draft.
Here's a rundown of what the Broncos return:
F- Geordie Wudrick - the 4th round pick of the L.A. Kings this summer will be looking to take the next step in his junior hockey career.
A gifted, big-bodied player who is looking for a break-out season. I don't think Geordie will ever be a top goal-scorer in the league but he will provide the team with a stable presence who can play in all situations. Geordie can score, but he may provide more of a support role for linemates Cody Eakin and Justin Dowling if the Broncos choose to keep that line together that was so productive in the playoffs. Regardless, he will be a major part of this year's team.
F - Justin Dowling - A former top scorer in the Alberta "AAA" midget league, we saw flashes of how talented he is at times last season. A head-turning playoffs should be the jump Dowling needs to get off to a strong start this season. He has a lot of offensive upside and a lot of people around the team are excited about his sophmore season in the WHL including me. His rookie season saw him collect 27 points. He should look to nearly double that output this season barring injury.
F - Jan Dalecky, - The 2nd year Broncos import from the Czech Republic is a player I'm really excited to see in an expanded role. Dalecky is a hard worker and good skater He works incredibly well along the boards and off the cycle. Pound for pound might be the strongest puck possession player on the team. You can see his talent. A year in the WHL under his belt should help the likable Dalecky have a productive season.
F - Mike Brown. The Calgary native is a favorite amongst his teammates. Brown is a thick, strong kid who did well in his 4th line role last season. Brown, who battled injuries will come into camp knowing what to expect. He will be pushed by some of the younger players this season but should be up for the challenge.
The Broncos do not have any 1990 d-men. I'm thinking it's probably on their wish list. If there is a trade in the works I would expect the Broncos would be getting one somewhere in the mix. If history tells us anything with G.M. Head Coach Dean Chynoweth, there's always a mini blockbuster the first week into the season.
1989's - 19 year-olds
Where the Broncos lack a 1990 d-men, they make up for it in their crop of 89's. So much so they felt Paul Postma was expendable in that big deal with Calgary to begin last season involving Kyle Bortis, Keegan Danereau and Erik Felde.
D - Eric Doyle - Look for Eric to be the man this season in his 4th year in the league. He will QB the powerplay and play key minutes, He's sure to add plenty of offense from the back-end. His 49 points last season was the offensive output the Broncos were looking for. Doyle will be one of the leaders on the team.
D - Ryan Molle - The New Jersey Devils 7th round pick will be a rock on the back-end this season. Look for a little more offense although he won't be relied on for that aspect. Primarily a shutdown d-man, look for Molle to see more time on the PP.
D - Derek Claffey - The Broncos defensive anchor. The Red Deer native excels in his own zone. He's going to be looked upon as a leader with this team once again. Bronco fans are looking forward to Claffey being the " Myles Rumsey type" but with more offensive prowess.
F - Grant Toulmin - Yes former 2nd round bantam pick Grant Toulmin will be back at Broncos training camp this season after a year in BCHL. He's excited to try and make an impact any way possible. Another good character player who wants to be more of a physical presence. We may see more of the rough and tumble side our fans were clamouring for out of Grant. Could add more offense than in years past. It will be interesting to see what a year of junior "A" did for him. He has a good attitude, and that's always a solid base to work with.
F- Matt Tassone - Last year's most improved player, now an NHL draft pick of the Dallas Stars (6th round). What a year for Matt Tassone who was fired up right out of last year's training camp. Look for more of the same from the native of Sherwood Park. Fans should be excited for the type of season Matt could have. He will score this season and be a big part of the offense. Look for a 25-30 goal season while providing some grit and toughness along the way.
G - Mark Guggenberger - A good pick-up from Portland at last year's trade deadline. Guggenberger had some astonishing numbers as a Bronco last season including a GAA of 2.59 and a save % of .917. His four shutouts in 14 appearances made a name for himself. It's just a matter of what mindset the goaltender will come in with this season.
With Travis Yonkman the favorite to see the bulk of the workload, do the Broncos have room for a 19 year-old back-up? Guggenberger has all the tools to be an elite goaltender in this league and turn pro. Can he make the most of it?
1988's - 20 year-olds
The Broncos have an elite group of 1988's. So much so that a lot of their tough decisions will be out of their hands with the prospects of several playing pro. The Broncos should have among the best group of 20's in the league this season.
Here's who may or may not be back. Remember, after the first week in October, the Broncos can only have three 1988 born players on their roster.
F - Levi Nelson - Already signed with Boston, Levi will more than likely play pro in Providence of the AHL this year Nelson will be at Broncos training camp, but strictly on a conditioning basis. He may play in some pre-season games but I'm not sure he will. He told me he would love to but I don't know what good it would do either him or the Broncos. I'll be keeping a close eye on Nelson this next season in the pro ranks and wish him all the best. Thanks for an exciting three seasons in a Broncos jersey.
F - Dale Wiese - The New Rangers draft pick could be back this season due to a lack of room in the Rangers system. Nearing their 50 contract max, the Rangers may really like Dale but won't be able to do much about it. Dale has already taken on the mindset that he will spend another year of junior hockey. If he does play this year with the Broncos look for him to be a dominant power forward. The selfish part of me wants to see Dale in a Broncos jersey but if he signs and isn't back then that's great for him. Potential Broncos captain candidate.
F - Spencer McAvoy - One of my favorites since coming over in a trade with the Tigers in his 17 year-old season, Spencer will be hard up for a spot with such an elite age group. He knows it but will come to camp and compete hard anyways. The versatile F/D will be a 20 year-old in the league somewhere if not with the Broncos.
F - Keegan Dansereau - Maybe one of the most skilled players to come through the team in awhile, the Broncos will have a tough decision to make here.

Washington, Aug 15 (IANS) Two-thirds of patients high blood pressure remains beyond control inspite of the best efforts of doctors, according to a medical expert. We are trying to identify the mechanisms through which blood pressure is regulated under normal everyday conditions - which is what stress is - and take that information back to the clinic to better determine what sort of therapy is going to be most effective at treating your blood pressure, said Gregory Harshfield, a director at Georgia Medical College (GMC).

Background: The term Web 2.0 became popular following the O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004; however, there are difficulties in its application to health and medicine. Principally, the definition published by O’Reilly is criticized for being too amorphous, where other authors claim that Web 2.0 does not really exist. Despite this skepticism, the online community using Web 2.0 tools for health continues to grow, and the term Medicine 2.0 has entered popular nomenclature.
Objective: This paper aims to establish a clear definition for Medicine 2.0 and delineate literature that is specific to the field. In addition, we propose a framework for categorizing the existing Medicine 2.0 literature and identify key research themes, underdeveloped research areas, as well as the underlying tensions or controversies in Medicine 2.0’s diverse interest groups.
Methods: In the first phase, we employ a thematic analysis of online definitions, that is, the most important linked papers, websites, or blogs in the Medicine 2.0 community itself. In a second phase, this definition is then applied across a series of academic papers to review Medicine 2.0’s core literature base, delineating it from a wider concept of eHealth.
Results: The terms Medicine 2.0 and Health 2.0 were found to be very similar and subsume five major salient themes: (1) the participants involved (doctors, patients, etc); (2) its impact on both traditional and collaborative practices in medicine; (3) its ability to provide personalized health care; (4) its ability to promote ongoing medical education; and (5) its associated method- and tool-related issues, such as potential inaccuracy in enduser-generated content. In comparing definitions of Medicine 2.0 to eHealth, key distinctions are made by the collaborative nature of Medicine 2.0 and its emphasis on personalized health care. However, other elements such as health or medical education remain common for both categories. In addition, this emphasis on personalized health care is not a salient theme within the academic literature. Of 2405 papers originally identified as potentially relevant, we found 56 articles that were exclusively focused on Medicine 2.0 as opposed to wider eHealth discussions. Four major tensions or debates between stakeholders were found in this literature, including (1) the lack of clear Medicine 2.0 definitions, (2) tension due to the loss of control over information as perceived by doctors, (3) the safety issues of inaccurate information, and (4) ownership and privacy issues with the growing body of information created by Medicine 2.0.
Conclusion: This paper is distinguished from previous reviews in that earlier studies mainly introduced specific Medicine 2.0 tools. In addressing the field’s definition via empirical online data, it establishes a literature base and delineates key topics for future research into Medicine 2.0, distinct to that of eHealth.

On the day that individuals were assigned to the low-stress control condition, they were given the skin prick test and then asked to read from a magazine. Then they were asked to tape themselves reading the same material aloud.
During the day that people were assigned to the experimental condition, however, they had a much tougher time.
Kiecolt-Glaser said: People who were highly anxious had raised wheals that were twice as big after they were stressed compared to their response when they were not stressed. These same people were four times more likely to have a stronger reaction to the skin test one day later after the stress.
We used a speech stressor test used in a lot of psychology research. Basically the participants each appeared before a panel of several who supposedly were behavioral experts. Participants had to give a 10-minute speech, which was videotaped, and then are asked a series of math questions they had to solve without paper or pen.
Afterwards, they had to watch their videotaped performance.
The whole exercise is a nice stress experiment in the laboratory, she said.
The researchers measured the raised that formed on the arms of the participants before and after they were stressed, as well as the next day.
The wheals on a person who was moderately anxious because of the experiment were 75 percent larger after the experiment, compared to that same persons response on the day when they were not stressed, Kiecolt-Glaser said, signifying a stronger reaction.
But people who were highly anxious had wheals that were twice as big after they were stressed compared to their response when they were not stressed. Moreover, these same people were four times more likely to have a stronger reaction to the skin test one day later after the stress, she said.
This next-day change - labeled a late-phase reaction - is important because it signals an ongoing and strengthening response to the allergens, and even suggests that sufferers may react strongly to other stimuli that previously hadnt caused them to develop an allergic reaction.
