I took him for his annual vet check this week and the vet said he had lost weight- which was good.  He still needs to lose a little more, not much. He was very healthy with good strong teeth. (The vet experienced those for himself!). So now I feel very relaxed about what I am feeding him.
Homemade Cat Food Recipe
This is based on the recipe given by  Anne at Cat Nutrition a real cat lover site. Shes been using this raw home made cat food recipe for 7 years, which is long enough to feel very confident of its merits.
I make a bulk amount of food up and put it into little freezer pots of 6 oz each. That is about what an average sized cat needs per day. It will be too much if the cat is an indoor cat who gets little exercise.
The recipe is a mixture of  raw meats such as minced chicken, including finely ground bone, some minced raw venison, egg yolks, minced heart and minced liver. I buy the meat from the pet food butcher. All this is mixed up together and then I add a vitamin and omega formula that I get from the pet shop. Its called My Beau and it was created by the veterinary school in New Zealand.
All you have to do then is remember to take a package out of the freezer each day. If you forget it soon thaws if you put the pot in warm water. Microwaving is not easy as it so easily cooks at the edges.
I have had no trouble changing him onto this new  cat food recipe, he seems to love it.
I would love to hear from anyone who has fed their cat on a natural all meat diet like this.

, 2008 at 8:30 in the morning my Mom took me back to my Vet, this time for surgery. You see it’s been 20 weeks (5 months!) now since I broke my leg and still no healing. Mom and Dad got several other options and quotes on how to fix my leg; one was as much as $3,200. With no guarantee that whatever any of them could do would work, again it’s my age and the length of time the old hardware has been in my leg.
My Mom and Dad spent a lot of time going over all my options. They finally decided the best thing to give me more years with them and our critter family was for me to have surgery to have my leg removed versus having me put to sleep. I know it was a tough choice for them to have to make.
The only day I could get in for the surgery happened to fall on the same day they had plans to celebrate their anniversary. I feel bad that they gave up their plans all because of me. I heard Dad say that they could do what they planned another time that they had to be home for me after I got back from having my surgery. It warms my heart to know how much they love me and want to take care of me. I know I’m Dad’s favorite dog here, but I don’t let the others know that.
I heard them talk about all the things they will do to help me adjust to not having my leg; I just hope my remaining front leg will be alright. So far it’s seem to have been handling the extra weigh with me not being able to use my broken one that I have just been carrying around.
I know my Mom was worried about my surgery and whether or not I’d come through it all right, but I did fine. It was long and took extra time because my Vet wanted to preserve as much of my muscles as she could for protection for my chest. My Vet finally called my Mom at Noon to let her know I was doing fine. I had to stay there until 4:00p.m so they could watch me after the anesthesia so I wouldn’t hurt my good front leg that was left while I woke up.
By the time I got home I was really hungry and thirsty because I haven’t had any food or water since 9:00 p.m. last night. I felt like I could eat and drink as much as a horse. But Mom and Dad wouldn’t let me. I only got a small amount of water at a time just to make sure I could keep it down and can’t have any food until breakfast tomorrow. Boy oh boy can’t wait to gobble it down! I spent the evening resting as Mom and Dad check on me every hour and would give me a little water or take me outside to potty.
The next morning I was feeling a bit more myself and I was very happy that I got to eat a little bit of my dry food for breakfast, but 15 minutes later, making sure that I kept my breakfast down there was Mom and Dad trying to put all this medicine in my mouth!
Three different kinds, an antibiotic, a pain med, plus an anti-inflammatory med. Yuck! Well let me tell you I don’t like the one medicine for inflammation that has to go under my tongue it’s just weird. Because I put up such a fuss Mom tried to hide my next dose of antibiotics in my dry food, I guess she thought it would be one less she would have to try and get in my mouth. I KNEW it was there but, I was so hungry I ate the food anyway. The good new is I heard my Mom ask Dad to pick up some can food when he went to work, yeah!! I get spoiled! I get can food and my brothers and sister don’t have! I don’t care if she wants to hide two of my meds in can food I get CANNED Food, I can’t wait to gobble it up! Hide all the stuff you want in it….it’s CANNED FOOD! Yum! All I know is I am getting about 2 weeks worth of CAN FOOD, yeah! What a treat for me.
In case you were wondering how I am getting around, I am doing just fine, I don’t have to figure out how to maneuver with that silly splint anymore, it’s going good. I still don’t get to go outside with my bigger brothers and sister but, I think that will just be a matter of time. I’m a fighter and have a lot of good years still left in me regardless of everyone saying I ‘m old. As Chico’s Mom told my Mom I’m a real trooper.
To ALL my friends out there that have been calling my Mom to see how I am doing I want to THANK YOU so MUCH for caring about my well being. You are just GREAT.

Remember yesterday when I thought it was Ivan going to the vet and not me, well, I was right. Late in the afternoon Mom loaded Ivan in my cat carrier (I bet they used my cat carrier just to throw him off) and away they went to the Vet. I know it was the Vet because as far as I know we dont really go anywhere else. My oh my, when he got home he was sure mad!!! He was even yelling at me, and he hasnt yelled at me since I came to live here. Mom told me not to take it personal that he wasnt really mad a me, he was just made. Mom also told Dad that Ivan sure told the Vet lady some not too nice things. Wonder why? Other that she told me I was too fat I thought she was pretty nice. Anyways, Mom and Dad seemed pretty happy with the check up that Ivan got so everything must be OK with his geriatricalthough I still dont know what that is. Ivan did calm down later in the day and by evening playtime he was pretty much back to normal. Im really glad about that cause I dont like it when he yells at me. Purrr! Zip! Later.

I'm always a little bit cagey when anyone asks me how many unfinished objects (UFOs) I have lying around. The truth of the matter is... I don't know. Which is a bit silly really... to have projects just waiting to be finished off. So much time has already been invested in them, that it seems crazy not to complete them.

And I honestly believe that it takes a huge psychological toll on a person. Knowing that you have such a huge backlog can be daunting. It's too easy to push the projects aside, trying to pretend they don't exist. But then they just eat at you from the inside, and you end up feeling disheartened.

Well Im not ok will aborting her pups. Im more then willing to take my time and find good homes maybe a contract that will allow me to know if they can no longer care for them I get the chance to take the pups back. I did want to breed he once with my male but I was lead to believe she would not be having a heat untill mid to the end of this year. Im a little worried her age 7 months might affect how she cares for the pups. She is a very loveing and active pup, but will she be able to do the mothering they will need?

This is way too young for a dog to be having pups. Shes still a pup herself. If the pregnancy is very recent, you do have the option to spay, which will abort the pups. But since you are not willing to do that, be prepared for what you will possibly end up with. Its possible, due to her young age, that she may not look after the pups as she should, which means you will have to do it. Thats feeding every 2 hours, monitoring 24/7 and cleaning up poo constantly (things mom normally takes care of).
If you are insisting on allowing this pregnancy, which I would say isnt a good idea, then you need to get her into the vet ASAP and discuss everything you will need to do and be aware of.

Cat Owners Have Lower Heart Attack Risk, Study

Owning a cat could reduce your risk of a heart attack by nearly one third, researchers told delegates of the American Stroke Associations International Stroke Conference in New Orleans last week. The finding provoked a mixed reaction from heart experts and veterinarians.

The finding was the main result of a 10 year study of more than 4,000 Americans by researchers at the University of Minnesotas Stroke Institute in Minneapolis. Executive director of the Institute, Dr Adnan Qureshi, who is also senior author of the study, was reported by US News World Report to have said:

For years we have known that psychological stress and anxiety are related to cardiovascular events, particularly heart attacks.

Qureshi said having pets probably helped to relieve stress. The researchers said dogs probably had a similar effect, but there werent enough dog owners in the study to show this conclusively. Previous research has linked contact with pets to heart benefits, they said.

Qureshi and colleagues extracted data on 4,435 Americans aged 30 to 75, from the second National Health and Nutrition Examination Study that took place from 1976 to 1980. 2,435 of the participants were current or former cat owners, while the remaining 2,000 had never had a cat.

Using the main outcome as death from all causes, including stroke and heart events, the researchers found that over a 10 year follow up period, cat owners showed a 30 per cent lower risk of death from heart attack compared to non cat owners.

Qureshi, who own a cat called Ninja, said they had expected to see an effect, because the theory was plausible, but the size of the link was a surprise.

Someone who was not surprised by the findings was Kathie Cole who presented the results of a study to the American Heart Association in 2005 that showed contact with dogs helped improve heart and lung function in people with heart failure. Cole is a clinical nurse at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Center and School of Nursing. She told US News World Report:

I would be inclined to think that any animal that is perceived as meaningful to a person in a positive way would have health benefits.

She mentioned other research that suggested pets had a calming effect. Unfortunately, the opportunity to have this low cost stress relief is denied to many potential heart patients who live in apartment blocks and nursing homes where pets are not allowed.

Qureshi said this research:

Opens a whole new avenue or intervention that we hadnt looked at before, one that can be made at the public level. And there appear to be no risks with this approach, unlike drugs or surgery, he added.

Others would disagree, saying that such findings are not proof of a causal link, only that a link between cat ownership and lower heart attack risk exists. Qureshi admits this, said a report in ABC News. The link could be to the personality and lifestyle of cat owners and not to the fact they have a cat.

Maybe cat owners tend not to have high-stress personalities, or they are just the type of people that are not highly affected by anxiety or high-stress situations, he said.

Qureshi and colleagues did not analyse the personality traits of cat owners and could therefore not shed light in this area.

Another reason to be sceptical, other experts told ABC News, is that other studies have shown quite different results. One for example, published in the American Journal of Cardiology in 1995, showed that while dog owners had a higher chance of surviving a heart attack, cat owners had a reduced chance. Director of the division of cardiology at the University of Miami, Dr Robert Myerburg, said this made sense because many people are allergic to cats, and not to dogs. He said he was surprised by this latest study.

Veterinary experts however, put across another plausible argument for why cats might bring more stress relief than dogs. Technical vice-president and veterinary pathologist at ARUP Laboratories in Salt Lake City, Utah, Lawrence McGill, said it was probably because cats are lap animals that want to be petted, and it is the petting that brings down the stress levels, and heart rate and blood pressure too, in many cases.

On the other hand, said McGill, dogs need hands on attention, which could actually raise the owners stress. When you get home from work the dog demands attention, you have to take it for a walk, dogs need to be fed according to a routine, whereas cats can practically take care of themselves.

The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates there are about 72 million pet dogs and 82 million pet cats in the US.

There is little or nothing on this disc relating to the inventive process, technological or commercial developments, intellectual property issues, or business efforts, in the history of the radio industry.
The disc consists entirely of pop-sociology fluff. There are interviews with elderly people recollecting the first time they heard a radio program. There is footage from old radio programs, that is, from the work done by actors in studios. There are images of glowing radio tubes, with no attempt to explain what is going on. There is footage of Frank Sinatra singing about the radio business. There is commentary on Lee de Forests love life. This disc is an insult to the viewer.
There is little in the disc to hold the attention of any intelligent child or adult. The disc under review is a real challenge to the mind. What this means is that the task of finding anything interesting in the disc is a real challenge.
The disc claims to have been inspired by Tom Lewis excellent book, Empire of the Air. I found little resemblance, except in the titles. Tom Lewis book, Empire of the Air, is a captivating, fact-based, account of the business and commercial interests of the various inventors of the radio, and radio broadcasting. Mr.Lewis book does not digress into the wasteland of pop-sociology fluff, as does the disc. Tom Lewis book gets FIVE STARS.
Tom Lewis book Divided Highways, an accounting of the recent history of the U.S. highway system, also deserves FIVE STARS. If you are further interested in engineering and inventions from the early 20th century, I would also recommend John Van Der Zees highly readable book about the Golden Gate Bridge: The Gate: The True Story of the Design and Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. John Van Der Zee also gets FIVE STARS.
But the disc under review is pure junk, an insult to anyone in the radio business or radio industrym, and an insult to any curious child or adult. ZERO STARS for the disc. Yuck. Blaugh. Ick.
